I’m Tamara Hunter, founder of Eye Am Pretty Braiding Academy. My journey into braiding began at 8 years old, as more than just a love for hair—it was a lifeline, a way to create beauty, income, and confidence in the face of life’s toughest challenges.
As a teen, I faced obstacles that could have broken me, but instead they shaped me. While incarcerated at 15 years old, I discovered the power of perfecting a trade. I earned my GED with the highest score in the state, became a classroom assistant, and mastered multiple skill certifications. These experiences taught me that knowledge and skill can unlock freedom—mentally, financially, and emotionally. Which formed the foundation to Eye Am Pretty Braiding Academy.
I started Eye Am Pretty Braiding Academy September 2012, with one goal: to equip people—especially youth and women—with professional braiding skills and the business know-how to turn those skills into sustainable income. Our programs don’t just teach styles; they teach self-worth, discipline, and the power of ownership.
Over the past 13 years, (and counting!) I’ve had the honor of training students who went on to:
